FROM THE MANUFACTURER - MORE ON THE ULTIMATE FLYER:
The Ultimate Flyer is an elegant, hand-made beauty that glides and turns like no other sled you've ever tried. The entire front section of the sled pivots, letting you make much sharper turns than on a conventional flexible flyer. And, it looks great standing on the porch in between sled runs. The Flyer is made to last for generations: thick birch planks, hand-carved willow hand rails and stainless-steel hardware make it tough, and we can hand-paint a child's name right onto the sled. Measures 48"L x 24" W x 4" H, 12 lbs.
When we build an Ultimate Flyer, we start with planks of beautiful, golden birch. We plane down the planks, sand them, burn in the Mountain Boy brand, and give every piece several coats of exterior-grade polyurethane. We attach hand rails of hand-carved willow, giving each sled a unique look and feel. Copper ferrules between the body of the sled and the rails add to the rustic look, while adding substantial strength. Just how strong? Well, some of our crazier fans take them off 6' jumps and see just how much airtime they can get.
On the bottom of the sled, we attach a pair of proprietary, custom-molded plastic skids. We like to think of them as greased lightning -- they are very fast, but their shape allows for smooth, decisive turning. Contoured runners bite into the snow or ice so you can carve down hard-packed slopes, while a solid bottom of custom-molded slippery plastic lets the sled float through soft snow.
Our crew, based here in Silverton, Colorado, is made up of people who are both sledding fanatics and woodworkers - as you can imagine, they are always trying to make each sled be as beautiful, functional and sturdy as possible.
The Ultimate Flyer meets all ASTM and USC child safety criteria. Please contact us if you'd like a copy of the independent test results.
How MountainBoy Sledworks does their part to be “Green” – We’re working hard to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment. We use only recycled cardboard packaging. We choose only fast-growing, common, sustainable hardwoods such as birch, willow and maple. We ensure that every part of the wood is used when making our products. Smaller pieces are turned into kick-sled slats or Christmas Tree Ornaments, and the smallest bits end up in our woodstove or in the wood-drying kiln. Just as important is making products that last! We think it makes sense to buy a sled (or wagon or scooter) that will last for years and years, rather than buying a cheaper sled that won't last nearly as long thus impacting the environment in a negative way by having to be replaced over and over again.
